The Witcher: Enhanced Edition /The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
Return to Geralt’s early days as an amnesiac Witcher with these classic action RPGs. While not as massive as The Witcher 3, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings are an absolute steal at only $1.49 and $2.99 on Steam, respectively.
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
One part Grand Theft Auto, two parts kung-fu action flick, and some John Woo cop drama for flavor, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition has something for everyone. Better yet, the Definitive Edition comes packaged with DLC extras, including a line of story missions that homage Enter the Dragon. At $1.99, you couldn’t get a better deal even if you were a part of the Hong Kong Triad.
Psychonauts
Travel the minds of drill sergeants, mutant fish, and pyromaniac milkmen in Tim Schafer’s iconic and trippy 3D platformer, Psychonauts. Use pyrokinesis, telekinesis, and other psychic powers to unravel a conspiracy involving world domination and an evil dentist. You don’t need hypnosis to get Psychonauts for dirt cheap because it’s already $1.49.
Grim Fandango Remastered
If you ever wondered why many gamers hold LucasArts (prior to its closure) in such high regard, look no further than Grim Fandango. This adventure game combines tight writing with ingenious puzzles to create a timeless classic, especially since the remastered version on Steam gives the old graphics a nice spit and polish. For only $2.24, you too can buy a top of the line video game.
Super Meat Boy
A tough as nails indie game, Super Meat Boy will challenge your platforming skills as you run and jump your way through some absolutely brutal levels. Add in a level editor and tons of unlockables, and $2.99 seems like more than a fair price.
Garry’s Mod
Garry’s Mod isn’t so much a video game as it is the ultimate sandbox experience. Whether you mess around with classic Source engine assets to create wild and wacky scenarios or participate in player-made game modes such as Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt, Garry’s Mod is a must for any Steam user. Now that the game is only $2.49, it’s more affordable than ever.
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy might look like any other cyberpunk FPS/RPG with a unique art style, but the game is all about player freedom. Missions can be tackled almost any way you can imagine, from sniping targets at a distance to wiping them out with hackable turrets that can hack you back.
You can even outnumber your enemies with thirty-something other players since E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy does not differentiate between single-player and multiplayer modes. $2.99 is more than reasonable for a game that will drive you insane in the best way possible.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut
While the semi-recent Deus Ex: Mankind Divided underperformed, Deus Ex: Human Revolution remains a masterclass in combining branching narratives, FPS combat, and stealth mechanics. You can now experience the full Human Revolution experience, complete with all the DLC and improved gameplay mechanics, for only $2.99.
Pathologic Classic HD
Pathologic is a psychological horror survival game where players don’t fend off zombies but instead try to cure a deadly plague, as well as fend off NPCs who react realistically to a crumbling society ravaged by disease. The game is neither easy nor straightforward, but that is part of its charm. Even though Pathologic was eventually remade from the ground up (and given the misleading title of Pathologic 2), the original game can now be experienced on Steam for the low price of $1.29.
Overlord
Not to be confused with the anime of the same name, Overlord is a game where players control the titular evil Overlord and use his dark powers to command an army of color-coordinated goblin-like creatures known as Minions. Overlord encourages players to be as evil as possible, and they can either be an evil tyrant who rules the land with an iron fist or an equally evil warlord who destroys everything in their path. Regardless of the choice, Overlord is a steal at $1.24, but the evil news doesn’t end there. For $2.49, you can also buy the DLC, Overlord: Raising Hell. Overlord’s sequel, Overlord II, is also $2.49 on Steam. Just don’t buy Overlord: Fellowship of Evil. It’s more than the price of a cup of coffee as well as a genuinely bad game.
Serious Sam HD
If you ever wanted the ultimate FPS challenge on Steam, Serious Sam HD is for you. Hundreds of enemies can swarm the screen at any given time; health doesn’t regenerate, and you can carry enough guns and ammo to wage war against an entire continent. Serious Sam HD is divided into two episodes, titled The First Encounter and The Second Encounter, which are $2.24 and $2.99, respectively. You seriously couldn’t ask for a better deal.
The Deadly Tower of Monsters
The Deadly Tower of Monsters is a love letter to old B-movies, all wrapped in an isometric, dungeon crawling package. Take on stop-motion dinosaurs, actors in rubber monkey suits, and the world’s campiest evil space emperor for only $2.99.
The Last Door
A point and click adventure game with hints of Lovecraftian lore, The Last Door manages to creep out gamers with nothing more than a bunch of pixels and a gripping story. The Last Door is split into two parts, $2.49 each, so pick them up for pennies on the dollar and beware the crows.
Crypt of the NecroDancer
We recently gave Cadence of Hyrule, the sequel to Crypt of the NecroDancer, a glowing review. It’s a stylish rhythm game that forces players to fend of tons of enemies to some addictive remixes of classic Zelda tunes. If you want to know why Nintendo trusted Brace Yourself Games to handle one of its most beloved properties, just buy Crypt of the Necrodancer for $2.99 on Steam and see for yourself.
Ultimate Doom
I can’t think of a better way to spend my free time time waiting for DOOM Eternal’s release than by revisiting where the series started. Ultimate Doom is, as the title suggests, the ultimate Doom experience, complete with a new episode, Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed. And for $2.49, no less.
Limbo
Most platformers are bright, colorful, and cheerful. Not Limbo. This game is as dark, dreary, and fantastic as they come. Plus, Limbo tells a story without a character ever uttering a single word. $1.99 is a bargain for this glorious and iconic game.
Tomb Raider
While the original Tomb Raider is available on Steam for $0.97, that game didn’t make the leap to modern operating systems unscathed, which is where the reboot of the same name comes in. Serving as an origin story for Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider reboot strands Croft on a mysterious island, and it’s up to players to help her survive. Croft might be rich, but even she would say $2.99 is a fair asking price for this gem.
FTL: Faster Than Light
FTL: Faster Than Light isn’t a long game, but that’s the point. The title lives up to its self-proclaimed moniker of “spaceship simulation roguelike-like” by offering gamers countless bite-sized adventures. Players need to maintain their ship and crew to survive, or they may end up kissing the vacuum of space. Every playthrough is a new experience, which is more than worth the $2.49 entry fee.
Rebel Galaxy
If you ever wanted a sandbox spaceship video game experience but felt EVE Online wasn’t for you, then you might want to try out Rebel Galaxy on Steam. You can mine for ore, engage in piracy, or anything else you want in a game “world” where every action organically affects how NPC factions interact with you. Rebel Galaxy might literally have a galaxy worth of content, which makes its $2.99 price tag hard to ignore.
Evil Genius
Evil Genius lets you channel your inner James Bond villain. Build the perfect evil lair —complete with henchmen and traps— commit random acts of villainy, and build your powerbase until you can finally take over the world. Evil Genius might be a little older than other games on this list, but it’s still worth playing, especially since it’s a steal at only $2.49. Moreover, this game is a must if you plan on buying Evil Genius 2 and need a refresher course on being evil.
