Zangetsu is the beloved protagonist from the first Bloodstained title, Curse of the Moon. Here’s what we know about playing as this fan-favorite character in Ritual of the Night.

UPDATE: As of May 7, 2020, Zangetsu is now available as a playable character in Bloodstained Ritual of the Night. To unlock him, you’ll first need to beat the game and achieve the good ending. After that, from the main menu, you can start a new game as choose Zangetsu as your playable character.

It’s worth noting that there are a few differences between a Zangetsu and Miriam playthrough. For instance, story cutscenes, along with the crafting and Shard systems, are disabled when playing as Zangetsu. He still has special abilities that consume MP, but he won’t have any of the Shard abilities that you’re used to from your original playthrough

Can You Play as Zengatsu in Ritual of the Night Right Now?

Unfortunately, at this moment in time, it’s not possible to play as Zengatsu, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to stay this way forever. It’s been noted that the first game’s protagonist will come to Ritual of the Night as a playable character in a post-launch update.

The bad news, though, is that there’s no official word on exactly when this update will arrive, and with players noting a number of bugs, including a game-breaking Silver Bromide bug, the developers will likely address these issues before releasing any additional content to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

The news was shared in the “2nd Playable Character Reveal” trailer that we’ve included down below. Here, we can see Zangetsu in action, voiced by David Hayter, using his Zangetsuto katana as he slices his way through countless demons.

Sadly, the trailer ends with a rather vague announcement that the character will come to Bloodstained “free after launch.”

As soon as the update is released and Zangetsu becomes a playable character, we’ll update this guide with a new section on how to play as the demon hunter on your adventure through Ritual of the Night.

For now, though, just sit tight and keep those fingers crossed the update comes sooner rather than later.
