Ubisoft Plans to Release a Skull & Bones Adaptation Before the Game

Ubisoft’s upcoming pirate game Skull & Bones is still far from making landfall, but the company is confident in the game. So confident, Ubisoft has announced a live-action adaptation will set sail before the game does.

Earlier today, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that Ubisoft is teaming up with Atlas Entertainment to adapt Skull & Bones into a “female-driven drama.” Atlas Entertainment has produced quite a few movies and shows, including 12 Monkeys, Get Smart, Warcraft, and Wonder Woman.

While we don’t know much about the project, the Hollywood Reporter states it will take place “in the lawless frontier of the Indian Ocean at the end of the golden age of piracy in the 1700s.” Moreover, Amanda Segel, who wrote for and produced shows such as Person of Interest and The Mist, will also write and produce this adaptation.

Skull & Bones is hardly Ubisoft’s first foray into video game adaptations, as the company previously produced the Assassin’s Creed movie and the Rabbids Invasion TV series. However, Skull & Bones marks the first time Ubisoft wanted to adapt a game that hasn’t even been released yet.

Even though Skull & Bones has yet to prove itself, Ubisoft’s Director of Development Danielle Kreinik is confident in its potential, as she claims, “Ubisoft is known for creating innovative video games that combine immense worlds with rich narratives.”  Kreinik will exec produce the adaptation alongside Segel, Senior Vice President at Ubisoft Jason Altman, and Atlas Entertainment’s own Andy Horwitz (Suicide Squad, American Hustle) and Richard Suckle (Wonder Woman, 12 Monkeys).

Only time will tell if Ubisoft’s gamble will pay off. More importantly, the success or failure of the Skull & Bones adaptation could impact other in-development adaptations that are being helmed by Ubisoft, including The Division, Child of Light, Werewolves Within, and the Assassin’s Creed anime that is being produced by Adi Shankar.
