A Quiet Place

Bird Box and A Quiet Place are two of the most popular horror films that focus on the senses. While Bird Box falls towards lack of sight, A Quiet Place is all about staying as quiet as possible.

This film takes place in the near future, where most of humanity has been wiped out by mysterious creatures who are sensitive to noise. These creatures are fast as they are deadly, killing anyone who so much makes a sound.

A Quiet Place gives us a deeper look into how humans live, centering around a family who has learned to cope with the threat through sign language and other clever methods. While they’ve managed to hide and live a relatively safe life, their world is thrust into danger after a few crucial mistakes are made.

A Quiet place is as thrilling as Bird Box, with the monsters actually having physical forms. Like Malorie, the parents in A Quiet Place learn to adapt and protect their children at all costs.

Don’t Breathe

Another sensory horror film, Don’t Breathe follows a group of petty thieves on what they think is an easy heist. The trio learns about a tip regarding a blind, old war veteran housing a massive fortune in his house by the slums.

When the thieves manage to break in, they soon learn that he is no ordinary old man. Despite his poor vision, he manages to stalk the thieves around his house with sound alone. It’s a thrilling cat and mouse chase between all parties, as the old man will stop at nothing to kill the invaders.

Don’t Breathe also manages to slip in a few shocking plot twists that will leave viewers reeling. While there aren’t any monsters like in Bird Box, Don’t Breathe is still as chilling and disturbing as the Netflix film.

The Mist

The Mist Movie

Whether it’s fog or mist, it always brings bad news. In The Mist, a mysterious outbreak forces a family in Maine to seek shelter indoors. The outside has been completely engulfed in mist following a devastating storm.

In its wake, people who step into the haze are killed by terrifying creatures who prowl in the misty shadows. While there aren’t any Bird Box blindfolds here, it’s still hard to make out the ruthless monsters in the dense fog.

The stragglers from the mist huddle together, like with Malorie and group who survive the Bird Box outbreak at the start of the movie. As they grow desperate for help and supplies, things take a sharp turn as they venture out from safety.

The Happening

The Happening is another outbreak film that revolves around a strange virus that makes people commit suicide. The deadly phenomena spreads across the United States, and a family decides to travel to Harrisburg.

Along the way, however, the plague manages to catch up to them, setting up a path of crazed suicides and murder. Unlike Bird Box, there aren’t any creatures or invisible monsters. Instead, the toxin is spread by something completely different and hints that there’s more death to come.

If you prefer horror films that lean towards outbreaks, The Happening is definitely right up your alley. It doesn’t have the same supernatural elements as Bird Box, although it’s just as disturbing, if not more.

The Crazies (2010)

Following a plane crash, a mysterious toxin causes a massive outbreak in a small farming town. The effects of the outbreak are nothing short of deadly, with residents suffering from murderous mental breakdowns.

A young couple and two others who are swept up in quarantine try to escape the area, forced to evacuate from both the infected and the military. With nowhere to go, they aim to leave the city and find safety. Of course, things are never really that easy, and the four struggle against waves of infected.

Humans are the real monsters in The Crazies, but like in Bird Box, they’re also driven to insanity because of a mysterious force. It’s a struggle for survival as the groups in both films are forced to fight to stay alive.
