How to Get Gears in Fallout 76

Recommended Videos

Bethesda’s Fallout 76 is all about rebuilding the land after civilization was wiped out when the bombs dropped. You’re part of civilizations best hope, and so it’s down to you to build your own little CAMP out in the middle of nowhere and make it your own. Of course, to do that, you’re going to need a bunch of crafting materials, with gears being one of them. Here’s how to get gears in Fallout 76.

Much like adhesive, wood, springs, and screws, gears can be got in Fallout 76 by scrapping particular junk items that you find lying around the world. Not everything will yield gears, it’s all about thinking what kind of items in real-life would have them, and then seeking them out in Fallout 76’s wasteland. However, to make things a little easier for you, we’ve provided a list of items known to have gears in Fallout 76.

Junk Items Containing Gears in Fallout 76

  • Desk Fans
  • Watches
  • Adjustable Wrenches
  • Cameras
  • Fishing Rods
  • Typewriters
  • Mole Miner Suit Scrap

That last one is a particularly handy and easy source of gears in Fallout 76. they tend to spawn a lot around Mount Blair, but we also found a bunch of them in Blackwater Mine, which you’ll have to visit as part of your tasks you’re completing for Rose in the ‘Key to the Past’ Fallout 76 main quest.

Plus, as an added bonus, the Mole Miner Suit Scrap also provides you with some black titanium, another handy crafting material in the game.

How to Lower Carry Weight and Scrap Items

Of course, carrying around 20 cameras, 10 fishing rods, and 5 typewriters will do some serious damage to your carry weight. In order to keep that down to a minimum, you’ll want to scrap your junk items in Fallout 76.

To do this, you’ll simply need to head to one of the workbenches dotted around the world, or that can be built at your CAMP. This can be a Weapons, Armor, or Tinker workbench, or even one of the Chemistry Stations, too.

Press Square on PS4 or X on Xbox One to access the Scrap Junk function of the workbench, and then either select the individual items listed above that you want to scrap with the left analog stick, or press Triangle or Y to scrap all junk items in one fell swoop.

Before pressing X or A to confirm, you should receive a breakdown of all the crafting materials you’re going to get from scrapping them, and gears should definitely be one of them. The more of the scrap items you have, the more gears you’ll get.

Scrapping junk items reduces the carry weight significantly, as it breaks these items down into their core components.
