Rockstar Co-Founder “Thankful” That They’re Not Releasing Grand Theft Auto 6 Right Now

Rockstar is preparing to launch one of the biggest games of this generation, Red Dead Redemption 2; a prequel to the critically acclaimed 2010 western open-world action game. With the Red Dead series acting as a period piece and not being reflective of the modern world, the events that are occurring in the real world at the moment, like our nation’s political situation, have no effect on the world of Red Dead Redemption 2, a game that takes place in the early 1900’s. Releasing a game, like let’s say Grand Theft Auto 6, in this day and age, would be “out of date within two minutes,” according to Rockstar co-founder and vice president, Dan Houser, who spoke to GQ in length about Red Dead 2 (via IGN).

Dan Houser is “thankful” that he doesn’t have to deal with releasing a game such as Grand Theft Auto 6 in the age of president Donald Trump and the ever-changing political atmosphere than be scary and unpredictable. Rockstar’s satirical take on the American life in GTA might not work as well in 2018 as it did back in 2015 with GTA 4:

“It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did. Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry. It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It’s hard to satirize for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 launches for PS4 and Xbox One on Oct 26. Rockstar is launching a companion app for the game on iOS and Android that will allow you to check out the entire world map, important stats, and other useful information.
