Possibly attributed to the marketing of Star Fox within the game, the Nintendo Switch version of Starlink: Battle for Atlas sold more on Switch than both Xbox One and PS4 combined in the United Kingdom. The addition of Star Fox to the game is an easy justification for the high sales on Switch. However, Nintendo fans in general may have appreciated the gameplay of Starlink: Battle for Atlas more than PS4 and Xbox One players.
According to Gamesindustry.biz, Starlink had a rather poor showing during its launch week, and the bulk of its physical copies were sold on the Switch in the UK. Regardless of the reasoning behind such a large discrepancy in sale numbers, only 10% of sales came from the PS4 version of the game, with Xbox One trailing behind with 9% of the game’s sales. Despite Starlink: Battle for Atlas’ strong sales on the Switch, its overall physical sales were not enough to crack the top 10 of the U.Ks physical sales week.
The Star Fox collaboration clearly paid off for Nintendo, however. Only time will tell if this leads to future success for the Star Fox series. Star Fox Zero, the last Star Fox game to be released, was considered a commercial failure for Nintendo, specifically in Japan where it currently is the lowest selling entry in the franchise.
