Yooka-Laylee Might Return in a Kickstarter-Backed Comic

Yooka-Laylee might not have been the Rare platformer revival it set out to be, but it is getting a second shot at fame thanks to a comic. That is, of course, assuming the company behind the book can raise enough money.

Dreamprism Press has revealed it will make the next entry in the Yooka-Laylee saga. I wasn’t aware there was going to be one, but after the game’s middling reception, the chameleon and the bat could use all the help they can get.

The comic, titled Yooka-Laylee and the Kracklestone, will be a massive, 120-page graphic novel. While we don’t know much about the book’s story, we do know that it will involve Yooka, Laylee, the evil Capital B, a few returning side characters, and something called the Kracklestone that makes whoever wields it invincible. Oh, and apparently Yooka’s kindness will cause more than a bit of trouble. You’ve got to love a story that demonstrates the dark side of being good-natured.

The comic will be written by D.M. Cumbo, founder of Dreamprism Press. While the name might not be too familiar, his art is easily recognizable. The man has worked on Sunset Overdrive, Resistance 2 and 3, and numerous Ratchet & Clank games, including Tools of Destruction, A Crack in Time, and Full Frontal Assault.

I mentioned the comic will need to raise money to be released, and so tomorrow, D.M. Cumbo will launch a Kickstarter campaign. According to IGN, the campaign will last one month and have a funding target of $40,000. Pledges will start at $15 for a digital copy of the comic, and readers who want a hard copy will have to pay $30, but at least they will receive a delightful hand-sewn hardcover.

At $50, backers will get a Kickstarter-exclusive edition, although we don’t know what makes it exclusive, and the limited Grand Tome Collector’s Edition will cost a whopping $75. But, since that edition will include various pieces of Yooka-Laylee art —all signed by Mr. Cumbo— a special coin, a bookmark, and a hardcover copy of the comic with gilded edges, I admit I am tempted to shell out the money myself.

Yooka-Laylee and the Kracklestone’s Kickstarter will end Friday, November 16th, and all backer rewards are scheduled to ship June 2019. Only time will tell if the rewards will ship out on time, let alone if the project is even funded.
