Try Out Each Specialist

Black Ops 4

CoD Black Ops 4 puts more of an emphasis on specialists than any game before it, as each character will play differently. Of course, they can equip the same guns, perks, etc, but they have unique special equipment and skills. Because of this Black Ops 4 starts to feel a bit like a hero shooter, although not on the level of something like Overwatch.

In multiplayer it’s important for you to understand how your specialist works, whether it’s using Ruin’s grapple gun to zip around the battlefield at high speed or Recon’s sensor dart to help your team spot enemies. Black Ops 4 will have 10 different specialists in the game at launch, but during matches, the specialists are first come first serve for your team. Two players can’t play as the same specialist.

Because of this, it’s important that you learn how to play at least a few different specialists, and know what role they should play on a team. When you first start up Black Ops 4’s multiplayer, it’s a good idea to just try each one out for a few rounds. See which specialist fits your play style best, and figure out how to effectively use their skills. Again, it’s important to not lock yourself into playing as only one specialist, however, as you might not always get that chance. From there you can customize your loadouts how you see fit.

Choose a Diverse Set of Scorestreaks

Scorestreaks, formerly known as killstreaks, have been a big part of CoD multiplayer for years. Obviously, the feature once again makes a return in Black Ops 4 with a host of different options. With everything from the RC-XD to a Gunship, it can be hard to decide which three scorestreaks you want to bring into battle.

The best thing you can do with scorestreaks is choose a balanced setup that’s going to benefit you in the long run. Sure, you could weight your scorestreaks heavily and go for only big hitters like the Gunship, Strike Team, and Attack Chopper. The problem with this, though, is that most players are going to have a tough time hitting the score requirement for the scorestreaks before a death.

Our recommendation is to pick an easy, medium, and difficult scorestreak, basically so it tiers as you’re playing. Start with something quick and easy like the UAV or DART that can help you wrack up a few points, then put a medium in like the Sentry Gun which can help score even more points. This makes it much more likely that you’ll be able to go for your top scorestreak, and get the points required. Plus it’ll just help you score more points in a match anyway.

Learns the Ins and Outs of Your Guns

It goes without saying that weapons are important in Black Ops 4. CoD has always tried to make each weapon unique, but Black Ops 4 really doubles down on that idea. Every weapon in the game has a set of unique attachments that plays to its strengths, so if you have a high-capacity SMG it’s going to get attachments like extended mags or quick reload.

Since we already suggested learning how to use specialists, it’s doubly important to learn which guns and weapons go best with specialists. For example, you might want to consider using shotguns or SMGs with Ruin, as he can easily zip right in front of an enemy with his grapple and blast them. On the other hand, you might want to use medium-range weapons for Torque as his razor wire and barricade abilities are good for blocking enemy lanes and slowing them down, letting you pepper them from a distance.

Adding to weapon customization is Operator Mods, a mod that adds a unique bonus. Most weapons in the game have their own unique Operator Mod, but it has to be at max level in order for you to equip it. Once it’s at max level you can head over to the Wildcard section of the weapon menu and add the Wildcard to your weapon of choice, although it will take up two attachment slots.

By the time you get a weapon to max level, it’ll most likely be your weapon of choice. Because of the ability to double down on guns with Operator Mods, it’s important to find the weapons you like and really lean into improving those.

Spend Some Time Learning the Maps

Map layout is vitally important in any multiplayer shooter, and Black Ops 4’s map designs, so far, are a bit more claustrophobic than other CoD games. The maps are packed tight with an emphasis on close to medium range combat. We’ve said this a lot, but the differences between specialists are also important here. Certain specialists will be easier to use on certain maps.

For example, in the tight streets of Seaside, Recon’s sensor dart can prove instrumental for spotting enemies. On Payload, Torque’s razor wire and barricade can help block off certain routes/entrances to the hanger the main fight takes place in. Meanwhile, Frequency is filled with cramped spaces and blind corners, making it ideal for the K-9 unit and mines of Nomad.

Obviously, learning the layout of each map and how your chosen specialist plays into that will give you an advantage. One thing you can do is play the game offline with bots and simply spend time exploring each map, trying out how your specialist’s skills work. It may not be as exciting as playing full multiplayer matches, but taking some time out to practice will go a long way if you’re really looking to jump into Black Ops 4’s multiplayer.

Heal Constantly

One of the bigger changes to Black Ops 4’s multiplayer comes with its healing system. Instead of being able to take cover and get your health back up, Black Ops 4 now has a manual heal system, set to L1. You’ll need to use this to heal yourself when you take damage, as you won’t heal otherwise.

Because of this, it’s important that you constantly remember to heal, and the recharge on your ability is actually quite fast. Luckily, the healing system can actually work tactically as well. When an enemy is pursuing you can duck around a corner to heal, get your health back up to full, and then blast them when they come around. Unless the enemy has also taken time to heal, you should have the leg up in that kind of situation.

Healing is one of the most important aspects in Black Ops 4, so make sure you’re not overlooking it as you’re playing.
