Games That Influenced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Destiny
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes inspiration from the Destiny franchise in a number of ways. Most notably, though, is the ability to upgrade your favorite weapons and armor in a way to keep them viable late in the game. In Destiny, if you like an armor piece or a weapon, but find loot that is better, you’re able to transfer some of the stats of the new to the old.
For the first time in Assassin’s Creed, you’re able to do this. To do so, you engrave your weapon or armor — presumably something you want to continue using — to increase its stats and make an otherwise under-leveled piece of equipment viable for higher level encounters.
This isn’t revolutionary by any means — in 2014, Destiny wasn’t the first game to do this — but it’s a welcome addition. Nobody likes to get rid of something that looks really cool because it’s not strong enough, so this feature alleviates the stress of those situations.
Odyssey (and Origins) also borrowed the same color variations denoting different levels of rarity and damage –only a small similarity but it’s another example of following the trends.
Games That Influenced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
The Witcher III
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey isn’t inspired by The Witcher 3 in any specific way; it copies the game in broad strokes. Last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins was the first to show a direct inspiration from the Witcher series and Odyssey dives even deeper into that.
Simply put, Odyssey is more RPG than Origins was. There are more numbers for people to chew on, question marks to explore, optional side quests with more narrative substance, and consequences to player actions. Essentially, there’s just more RPG-factor, and plenty more content for players explore, but the game’s flow feels distinctly CD Projekt Red in design.
Games That Influenced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Mass Effect
The Mass Effect series might be the most obvious influence of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Specifically, the dialogue and even more specifically, the romantic options in the game. Like Mass Effect, Odyssey will allow players to craft a personality for Kassandra or Alexios based on how they speak to people and handle tasks throughout the world, much like Commander Shephard.
If you want Kassandra or Alexios to act humble, you can do that. If you want the world thinking they’re gods sent from above, you can also do that. You can act Paragon or Renegade or a mix of both (although Odyssey won’t call it that).
Furthermore, in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you can romance a dozen or so characters in the game. On top of that, you’re free to romance whoever you want, so long as they’re willing to show you some love back. Just like in Mass Effect, characters you romance will be available to recruit as a member of your seafaring crew in the Mediterranean Sea.
Games That Clearly Influenced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Far Cry 5
Your main objective in Far Cry 5 is completing tasks throughout a region to get the attention of and/or weaken the region’s leader. You do this so that you can eventually fight them and hopefully end their grasp on the area. In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you’ll be doing something very similar.
As a mercenary, Kassandra or Alexios will have to take out nation leaders. To do that effectively, they must complete a number of tasks to weaken the leader’s hold on the region and weaken their security. After completing enough tasks, the nation leader will be alone and ripe for assassinating.
Like in Far Cry 5, it’s at this point that you will finally face the leader of the region.
Games That Clearly Influenced Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Grand Theft Auto V
If you’ve played Grand Theft Auto V, you know that one of its most exciting features is the bounty system. Basically, the more criminal things you do, the higher your bounty rises. In no time, you’ll find yourself on the run from not only cops but SWAT teams, helicopters, other players and more.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey must have taken notice of the enjoyment that comes with an omnipresent feature like bounties because, for the first time in the series, players will have a bounty meter to take care of. Do something town guards don’t like and you’ll see your bounty rise. Honestly, if you do anything the mercenaries in the game don’t like, your bounty will rise.
Like in Grand Theft Auto, as the bounty rises, so too does your ability to stay alive in the game. In Odyssey, you can kill those after your head or you can simply pay your bounty off. Hopefully, years and years of Grand Theft Auto has taught you that option one is the way to go.
