Don’t Have the Cash to Pay for Switch Online? You Can Use My Nintendo Gold Points Instead

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo is rolling out their paid subscription-based online service for the Nintendo Switch tomorrow, and while we don’t know all of the specifics of the service just yet, Nintendo has stated that folks who have extra My Nintendo Gold Points laying about will be able to use them to purchase subscription time (via Siliconera).

The Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ page notes that “Gold Points can be used when purchasing a membership in the Nintendo eShop. They cannot be used for auto-renewal.” If you plan on using your gold points, just remember that you’ll have to purchase your subscription each time it runs out or you won’t be able to access the online modes in your games like Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe.

Meanwhile, it seems that people who subscribe to the service will have to “check-in” with their Nintendo Switch at least once a week in order to have access to the classic NES games that Nintendo is offering up. We also found out that the backup cloud saves that are part of the service will be gone from the cloud forever when your subscription expires, or at least shortly after.

Will you be subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online or do you think the yearly $20 fee is a bit steep for what the company is offering up? Let us know in the comment section below.
