Madden 19: How to Lateral the Football

How to Lateral in Madden 19

Recommended Videos

The lateral play in Madden 19 is among the most exciting, and rarest plays in football. It’s extremely difficult to pull off both in-game, or in real life. This is because it’s very risky to intentionally give up control of the football. If the ball carrier messes up the throw, the receiver messes up the catch, or a defender gets in the way of the pitch, it can be a messy turnover for what might not have even yielded much yards to begin with. Because, don’t forget, you can’t forward lateral, you can only pitch the ball to someone that’s behind you. So you’re intentionally giving up yardage in hopes that you can gain more through the lateral. It’s a very high risk, potentially low reward type of play, which is why you don’t see it very often both in Madden 19, and in real life.

Still there are some very rare situations, like desperation kick-off returns, or golden opportunities that you can use a lateral to exploit while carrying the football that you’ll want to know what button to press.

To lateral the football in Madden 19, simply press L1/LB (PS4/Xbox One), if someone is near you, a line will emanate from the ball carrier and you can line up a pitch to the person behind you. If you do it correctly, the ball will safely reach the hands of your teammate and you can try and sneak a couple of extra yards out of your play. Keep in mind again, there’s a reason you don’t see this play all that often in normal play. It’s quite risky and could lead to frustrating turnovers. In the right hands, at the right time though, it could save or even greatly enhance a play.
