Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Director James Gunn Fired by Disney

After a slew of old tweets resurfaced last night on Twitter, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Director, James Gunn, has been fired by Disney, the company has announced.

James Gunn was hard at work on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but as of now, the Guardians trilogy will conclude with a different director steering the ship. As originally reported by Deadline, the move to fire Gunn comes after old tweets of his surfaced online. The controversial tweets show Gunn joking about a slew of unsavory topics. Shortly after Deadline broke the news, Disney released a statement confirming what Deadline had reported.

“The offensive attitudes and statements on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” the statement from Chairman of Walt Disney Studios Alan Horce reads, obtained from Deadline.

Since these tweets have resurfaced, Gunn took to Twitter to release a final batch of tweets addressing the situation. In them, he confirms he wrote the tweets in question and attempts to apologize for the messages he made in the past. You can check them out below.

The move to fire Gunn came after a conservative personalities on Twitter presented old tweets of Gunn showing the director making jokes about the controversial topics previously mentioned. Conservative website The Daily Caller originally dug up the old Tweets, which ranged from as old as 2008 to as recent as 2012. Shortly after that, conservative personalities on Twitter called upon their followers to confront Gunn at the San Diego Comic Con, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gunn was set to make an appearance today during the Sony Pictures panel at SDCC, but it’s now unclear whether or not that will actually be happening. At this panel, it was predicted that Gunn would reveal the non-Marvel project he recently teased on Twitter.
