Overlord III

Best Anime of July 2018

Recent years have seen a wealth of different anime that all take place inside an online game. This includes Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, and, of course, Overlord. Overlord tells the story of Momonga, a veteran player in the Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, Yggdrasil. As the MMO is scheduled to be shut down, Momonga refuses to log out, and strangely NPCs begin to develop personalities and minds of their own. Momonga is trapped within a reality created by the game and he’s unable to use his player functions, so he decides to set out and see if there’s anyone else from the real world trapped in Yggdrasil.

The third season of Overlord picks up right where the second season left off, and it looks to be continuing the trend of Momonga being a completely overpowered hero. The first episode of Overlord III is set to premiere on July 10, and you can catch the show on Crunchyroll. A Simuldub is planned for Funimation, but there isn’t a date on when it may start as of yet.

Hanebado!

Best Anime of July 2018

Now on the complete opposite side of everything else you have Hanebado!, the latest in a line of over-the-top sports anime. This time around, however, the sport is Badminton, that’s right Badminton. Hanebado stars Ayano Hanesaki, high school girl who’d much rather avoid Badminton than play it. However, her perceptions are changed when she meets Nagisa Aragaki, a third-year student who spends every waking moment perfecting her game.

Hanebado has some gorgeous animation and the Badminton matches seem like they’ll actually be a blast to watch. It’s comparable to something like Prince of Tennis, with incredibly over-the-top abilities during matches. The show sees Ayano and Nagisa striving to perfect their skills with the encouragement of their coach, and taking on a variety of tough opponents in the process. If nothing else, the fact it’s about Badminton makes it an incredibly unique sports anime. You can catch Hanebado on Crunchyroll and Funimation, and one episode has already aired so far.
