Have you ever wanted to use your phone and selfie stick to mine rocks or cut trees, and gain some sweet XP while doing so? Well, now you still can’t, but Square Enix has produced an April Fools’ video of what this type of game could look like with their mock trailer of Final Fantasy XIV Online Go.
The video humorously parodies the Pokemon Go craze, splicing the location-based augmented reality genre with Square Enix’s current MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. In Final Fantasy XIV, Disciples of the Hand classes (miners, botanists, and fishers) can gather items at available nodes or bodies of water. In Final Fantasy XIV Online Go, players would have been able to visit these nodes in real-world locations, just like PokeStops in Pokemon Go.
The funniest thing about this April Fools’ video is the new “state-of-the-art” accessory called the “Harvesting Stick.” The accessory would allow you to turn your phone into a hammer or an axe that you could then swing at real-life rocks and trees “boosting your gathering effectiveness.” The video even shows a player using the accessory as a fishing rod, tossing their phone into a lake; doing so played the famous Final Fantasy victory jingle.
There is a warning at the end of the video: “Square Enix accepts absolutely no responsibility for inevitable phone damage, loss or human injury. Please do not sue us.”
