Don’t Jump Straight into Multiplayer

Metal Gear Survive Tips and Tricks for Beginners

This might be tempting to do, considering that Metal Gear Survive has been billed as a zombie co-op shooter game, but don’t be too hasty in checking out the multiplayer modes when you’re just starting out. Whatever stats you have in the campaign will be brought over to co-op, and that includes the amount of max health and stamina you have, along with your personal inventory and equipment loadouts.

The co-op mode is available right from the start of Metal Gear Survive, but we highly advise completing the prologue and tutorial of the single-player campaign before getting into that. The campaign teaches you the basics, such as hunting animals for raw meat, and looking for watering holes to fill up your empty bottles. Your hunger and thirst meters are integral to your survival, so you’ll want to make sure you have enough resources to keep those meters up at all times.

You’ll also want to get more weapons and gear before jumping into co-op. Believe us, playing co-op and facing down against a horde of zombies with just a spear is not fun at all.

Hoard Everything

Metal Gear Survive Tips and Tricks for Beginners

As you explore the large environments in Metal Gear Survive, you’ll come across a lot of materials and resources you can pick up. Don’t hesitate to hoard them all. Metal Gear Survive gives you quite a bit of inventory space, and you’ll need all the resources you can get to craft ammo, fences, clothing and armor, and other types of equipment. Not to mention food and water, which you’ll need to maintain your max health and stamina meters.

Most importantly, don’t forget to break the dark red crystals and pick up the Kuban Energy that drops from them. This is the main form of currency you’ll be using in Metal Gear Survive, and it’s required in virtually everything you do from crafting to leveling up. There are also various items in the world that can be broken with a few weapon swipes, such as oil drums and wooden planks. Breakable items will look shinier than the environment, and you’ll see a health bar next to them. Break them for materials.

Level Up When You Can

Metal Gear Survive features a leveling system, complete with skill points that can be used to kit out your avatar. You’ll gain levels by completing mission objectives in the campaign and in co-op mode, and new skills can be unlocked with Kuban Energy. This is important; you can’t increase your stats if you don’t have enough Kuban Energy to do so. Thankfully, this can be obtained by breaking red crystals and killing enemies and Fulton-ing them away once you’ve unlocked the recovery system.

Leveling can be done at the Skill Trainer box at your base camp. From here, you can access a skill tree and level up your strength, vitality, dexterity, and more. Increasing your vitality and health meter is always useful, but don’t forget to check the rest of the skill tree as well to see which perks will best suit your play style in Metal Gear Survive.

Craft Before Leaving Base Camp

Lastly, don’t forget to check your gear and equipment before heading out to the next objective marker. Always make sure you’ve got a healthy stock of fences or barricades with you. The fences are invaluable for keeping the Wanderers away from you as you poke at them with your spear. You most likely won’t have a gun for quite some time near the beginning of Metal Gear Survive, so the spear-fence method is a great way of killing enemies with minimal resources.

You’ll also want to make sure you’ve got enough clean water and cooked food with you. Stamina drains pretty quickly in Metal Gear Survive, and things can get out of hand if you don’t keep your thirst meter in check. You don’t want to be caught in a situation where you have minimal stamina and you’re surrounded by a horde of Wanderers, so always keep it topped up. It’s also worth checking at the workbench for new weapons and equipment you can craft as well. Better armor means you can take more hits before dying, and better weapons mean you’ll be well-equipped to deal with threats.
