Sony’s PhyreEngine Now Compatible With The Nintendo Switch

Opening up even more possibilities.

Dragon Quest Builders, Minecraft

While Nintendo’s third-party releases for the Switch have been plentiful, a recent update by Sony will actually make the console’s library even bigger. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s free-to-use engine, PhyreEngine, is now compatible with the Nintendo Switch. The engine has been used to make many games like both Hotline Miami games, Unravel,  Danganronpa, and Dragon Quest Builders which is getting a Switch port itself.

The update was first revealed by Japanese Twitter user @madai_s, with a photo showing a trademark from Sony for the PhyreEngine on the info screen of the Switch’s eShop page for Dragon Quest Builders’ demo. While PhyreEngine is being used to create Dragon Quest Builders, Sony has yet to make any announcement about the update to the engine and whether all publicly available versions of the engine will work with the Switch.

If the engine is publicly compatible with the console, this means ports of games like Hotline Miami could be ported very quickly to the Switch.

PhyreEngine was formally released by Sony in 2008, but gained traction with its 3.0 version in 2011 with the release of the PS4. Since then, the engine has added support for nearly every modern system, including the Xbox One, Playstation Vita, Playstation VR, Android, and iOS.

The first port using PhyreEngine, Dragon Quest Builders, is coming to the Switch on Feb. 9.
