How to Counter Attacks in Middle-earth: Shadow of War
The combat in Middle-earth: Shadow of War hasn’t really changed from the first game. You’ll execute basic attacks with the square button and hit your enemies until they fall down, then use an execution move to finish them off. However, when you’re caught in a fight with multiple enemies, your foes will inevitably try to hit you while you’re focused on someone else. To prevent Talion from getting stabbed in the back, you’ll need to learn to counter enemy attacks.
This can be done easily simply by watching your enemies as you’re attacking someone else. Just before an enemy hits you, an icon for the Triangle button (or the Y button, on Xbox One) will appear above their heads for a brief moment. You’ll need to hit the button as soon as it appears in order to counter their attack successfully. By doing this, you can mitigate all damage that would otherwise be done with you, and strike back with a combo of your own.
Make sure to keep an eye on surrounding enemies, and counter them as necessary.
