VOEZ Is the First Portable-Mode Only Switch Game

Not switching things around

VOEZ, a rhythm game by developers Rayark Games, is the first-known portable-mode only game for the Nintendo Switch.

A 2016 release for iOS and Android, the game will be published on the system by Flyhigh Works, and will be touchscreen-only like its earlier releases. This means that it will utilize the Switch touchscreen pad, but no other aspect of your Switch.

Whilst it makes sense for a game developed for smartphone screens to miss out on the jump to TV, it will create questions for many. With Nintendo branding the Switch as a fully-hybrid console, the idea of some games only being playable in a certain mode may seem contradictory.

While nothing has been confirmed as of yet, VOEZ may just be the first of many titles following a similar path. This also begs the questions as to whether or not developers of future AAA titles, namely third party ones, could take the opposite route, and instead make home-console-mode only games, skipping the less powerful portable-mode.
