Pokemon Sun and Moon introduces a whole host of new Pokemon to the series, some of which are a bit more extreme than others. The new games celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pokemon, and the development team has said they wanted to mark the occasion with memorable monster designs. Each Pokemon has a different Pokedex description in Sun and Moon, but combining both shows off some crazy monsters. Here’s 10 of the craziest new Pokemon in Sun and Moon, along with their respective Pokedex entries.
Dhelmise
“Swinging its massive anchor, it can KO Wailord in a single blow. What appears to be green seaweed is actually its body. The soul of seaweed adrift in the waves became reborn as this Pokémon. It maintains itself with new infusions of seabed detritus and seaweed.”
This Pokemon is the actual living incarnation of seaweed, and is known as a “Sea Creeper Pokemon.” It’s also unique as a ghost/grass type that learns quite a few different moves along the way. Besides moves like Mega Drain and Shadow Ball, Dhelmise also learns Steel, Normal, and Water moves. This is one terrifying Pokemon you don’t want to see beneath the waves.
Lycanroc
“Its quick movements confuse its enemies. Well equipped with claws and fangs, it also uses the sharp rocks in its mane as weapons. When properly raised from a young age, it will become a trustworthy partner that will absolutely never betray its Trainer”
Lycanroc is very interesting because of the two very different forms it has. This Rock type Pokemon evolves from Rockruff, and has a different form for both Sun and Moon. Sun’s version is the stoic looking wolf featured above, but Moon’s takes a decidedly different turn. That version is a terrifying looking werewolf Pokemon, with a shaggy mane and glowing red eyes. Both versions learn the same mix of Rock, Normal, and Dark moves but the visual difference is startling.
Araquinid
“It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown. Despite what its appearance suggests, it cares for others. If it finds vulnerable, weak Pokémon, it protectively brings them into its water bubble.”
This Bug/Water type is a strange looking Pokemon. It’s a giant water spider, that has a protective astronaut helmet looking bubble around its head. It evolves from its smaller form Dewpider, and learns a ton of Bug and Water moves along with a couple Dark. One of the most terrifying things about it comes from the Pokedex entry. One entry says it protects other Pokemon, while another says that small Pokemon drown in its bubble. Talk about scary.
Bewear
“This immensely dangerous Pokémon possesses overwhelming physical strength. Its habitat is generally off-limits. This Pokémon has the habit of hugging its companions. Many Trainers have left this world after their spines were squashed by its hug.”
This cuddly looking bear evolves from the Normal/Fighting type named Stufful. But for how cute this fluffy guy looks, underneath lies a terrifying Pokemon who’s name matches perfectly. Bewear has some powerful moves, and it doles out death hugs. Its Pokedex description basically talks about how many trainers it’s killed, so yeah there’s that.
Comfey
“It attaches flowers to its highly nutritious vine. This revitalizes the flowers, and they give off an aromatic scent. Baths prepared with the flowers from its vine have a relaxing effect, so this Pokémon is a hit with many people.”
Fairy is one of the newer types introduced to the Pokemon series, but Comfey fits the bill exactly. This Pokemon is a literal Hawaiian Lei, and it has a relaxing effect for trainers. It learns a ton of Fairy and Grass type moves, and is especially adept at status effects and healing. There may not be a single Pokemon that fits the tropical theme of Sun and Moon better.
Palossand
“Possessed people controlled by this Pokémon transformed its sand mound into a castle. As it evolved, its power to curse grew ever stronger. Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained.”
There are some dark Pokemon in Sun and Moon, but Pallosand might be near the top. The Ghost/Ground type evolves from small mound of sand called Sandygast. Surprisingly, it can also learn Grass moves that let it absorb enemies life. Of course, Palossand wouldn’t even exist if it didn’t possess humans to help build itself up. What a strange Pokemon, for such a cheerful region.
Type: Null
“The heavy control mask it wears suppresses its intrinsic capabilities. This Pokémon has some hidden special power. Due to the danger that this synthetic Pokémon may go on a rampage, it wears a control mask to restrain its power.”
The first time you encounter this Pokemon, it almost seems like its name may be a mistake. Type: Null is originally owned by Gladion, a member of team skull. It’s actually a man-made Normal type Pokemon, but can learn a ton of different moves because of that fact. The Pokedex description Type: Null has also suggests an immense hidden power.
Komala
“It is born asleep, and it dies asleep. All its movements are apparently no more than the results of it tossing and turning in its dreams. The log it holds was given to it by its parents at birth. It has also been known to cling to the arm of a friendly Trainer.”
It’s strange to say that a Pokemon may have taken the laziest title from Snorlax, but that’s just the case. The Normal type Komala is constantly asleep, with no way to tell if it’s ever awake. Apparently, its saliva can also be used as a medicine for people who are unable to sleep. Talk about a creature who’s entire existence revolves around rest, sheesh.
Mimikyu
“ts actual appearance is unknown. A scholar who saw what was under its rag was overwhelmed by terror and died from the shock. A lonely Pokémon, it conceals its terrifying appearance beneath an old rag so it can get closer to people and other Pokémon.”
Mimikyu drew a lot of attention early on when Sun and Moon were announced, and for good reason. This Pikachu look-alike has a pretty tragic backstory, as apparently it’s so terrifying to look at that it has to hide its features. Mimikyu is also incredibly lonely, and just wants to be loved as much as the series’ iconic mascot. It’s a Ghost/Fairy Pokemon, so it learns a nice mix of moves along with some Normal and Dark type ones.
Kartana
“This Ultra Beast came from the Ultra Wormhole. It seems not to attack enemies on its own, but its sharp body is a dangerous weapon in itself. One of the Ultra Beast life-forms, it was observed cutting down a gigantic steel tower with one stroke of its blade.”
All of the Ultra Beasts in Pokemon Sun and Moon are pretty odd, as they’re strange alien creatures that appear from dimensional portals. The Grass/Steel type Kartana pretty much takes the cake though, because of its absolutely strange design. It looks like some kind of mix between origami and a couple of deadly katanas. Not to mention its moveset is all over the place with it learning Bug, Steel, Flying, Fighting, Normal, and even a Dark and Psychic move. Talk about one strange mashup of a Pokemon.
