The Power of Kinship
A lot of the assassins in the Assassin’s Creed franchise are pretty awesome by their own right, there’s no disputing that. But when it came to Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, the developers wanted to do something different. Instead of one protagonist, fans were given two fully capable, very charming individuals who complemented each other well but never felt incomplete.
You have Jacob, the brute who’d rather crack skulls and run his gang than believe in prophecies and weird artifacts. Then there’s Evie – smart, stealthy, loyal, and just as deadly as anyone else who’s ever taken up the creed. On their own, they are a force to be reckoned with, but may heaven have mercy on the poor soul who is forced to take them both on.
Their Own Gang
A lot of the assassins we’ve had the privilege of taking control of throughout the Assassin’s Creed franchise have risen to great power after years of missions and training. Heck, we even got to control Ezio as he was the grand master, and that’s not too shabby at all. But the Frye twins managed to gain status not only within the ranks of their ancient order, but in the streets of London as well.
After arriving in the bustling city and witnessing the injustices against the people there, they knew something had to be done, but they were only two in a new city controlled by corruption and crime. The Templars had a gang patrolling the streets known as the Blighters, so the twins decided to fight fire with fire. They founded the Rooks, a ruthless street gang that had two purposes: protect the citizens of London and destroy the Blighters every chance they got.
The Rooks weren’t assassins, so they weren’t forced to adopt a creed and were often overlooked since they weren’t the primary targets of the Templar order. That made them perfect soldiers.
Not Afraid of Street Fights
Yes, getting caught out in public goes against the whole creed. You’re expected to use sabotage and subterfuge as you make your way closer to your mark and complete your contract. Leaving no evidence is the mark of a true assassin, but sometimes you just want to cut loose and have fun. The Frye twins weren’t just here for a few contracts and taking down the Templar Order’s big wigs. They were here to liberate the people of London and give them the strength they needed to fight back. One of the best ways to do this was large street fights between the Rooks and the Blighters.
The best part was that they didn’t just order people around and watch from above. The Frye twins weren’t only leaders, they were members, and Jacob loved to jump in with his fellow gang members and crack some skulls. He and his sister, Evie, were nightmares in the shadows, but they were just as frightening when you got to face them in a fair fight in broad daylight. They would rally their troops and throw fists with the best of them while carrying the worries of the people on their backs.
They Have a Friggin’ Train
We’ve had some interesting means of travel in all of the Assassin’s Creed games including horses, flying machines, and pirate ships. And there’s something to say about the freedom afforded by those modes of transportation, but the Frye twins managed to get a train. They had a roaming, iron base that moved around the city unchecked by anyone (which is a bit surprising).
They could store weapons here, keep mementos, check in on mission status, see the countryside, or just hang about. It kept the Templars from pinpointing their location (which is admittedly useful), and it just looked cool to have such a powerful machine at your disposal just as the industrial age was really starting to gather steam.
Those Weapons
The industrial revolution was not only a time where the technology used around the world evolved. Society and laws evolved as well, making the act of walking around with your weapons clear for everyone to see no longer acceptable. Naturally, this put a lot of pressure on Evie and her brother, as they no longer had the freedom that their predecessors had. Of course, that didn’t mean they wouldn’t bring any weapons, they just had to become more crafty.
The hidden blade remained, only with a few adjustments. It fired darts, but also had a grappling hook allowing players to zip around the new layouts that cities were adopting. Their large weapons such as swords were now transformed into ornate canes, something you could see all around high society. Within these walking sticks were elegant tools of death capable of rending flesh and piercing hearts. Within their coats, the Frye twins kept Kukri knives and other small blades, revolvers, and small explosives. They adapted to the times and looked badass while doing so. Under more scrutiny than any other assassin had faced, they managed to prevail with an awesome arsenal.
The Frye twins have proven that they are not just some young recruits who happen to wear the hood. They are proven leaders and vicious fighters who fought to not only maintain their creed, but to liberate a city and a country. Their example led to countless other amazing assassins, and they will definitely go down as being two of the best to have ever lived.
