No Man’s Sky’s PS4 and PC Versions Run on Separate Servers

One big universe becomes two.

Today, in a Reddit AMA celebrating the imminent launch of No Man’s Sky, Hello Games founder Sean Murray clarified a detail about the game that few have likely thought about, but is important to know: the PS4 and PC versions of No Man’s Sky run on separate servers, and therefore, have unique universes.

This means that the two versions of the game won’t share universes, and thus won’t share the names of new discovered planets, animals, and landmarks. So, theoretically, a planet you discover and name yourself on PS4 could also be found and named something different in the PC version of the No Man’s Sky universe. Though, with more planets in the game than any one person will ever be able to see, the odds of that happening seem very slim.

Murray added to the clarification with a cheeky challenge to players. “We are running a control experiment to see who names things the most juvenile things… Let the games begin!”

Earlier today in the same AMA, Murray also told us when we can expect the PC version of the game to unlock officially this Friday. And more interestingly, he also said that Hello Games is already working on an unannounced “small experiment.” No Man’s Sky VR? Joe Danger 3? We’ll have to wait and see.
