3. Striker
Like all of Destiny’s classes, the Striker is NOT bad, but something has to be the bottom of the Titan subclasses.
Strikers do one thing really well: Kill. They are glass cannons built to ram into things, blow them up with their nuke-like super Fist of Havoc, and/or zap foes with the power of Arc. If you need hordes of enemies taken out, whether in PvP or PvE, there’s few that can get the job done better than a Striker can. Lighting Grenades are arguably one of the best tools in PvP, and are equally destructive in PvE when positioned well; and nothing evaporates enemies quicker than Fist of Havoc.
However, even with a recent buff to the Striker’s already powerful damage, Striker is still missing the survivability and versatility that the other two Titan subclasses possess. A Striker can easily get INTO combat fast and hard, and do serious damage. The problem is getting back out to safety and away from any distant enemies left untouched. It’s an issue that affects the Striker more in PvE, and has limited its usability in difficult battles since Destiny’s inception.
God help us all though if Strikers ever get an ability that keeps them alive better, or gets them back to safety quicker. A lot of Guardians will be out of a job on that day.
2. Sunbreaker
Yes, the Sunbreaker is not the same PvP killing machine that it once was when The Taken King first came out. Those were dark times. While the Sunbreaker has been brought back to the pack a little, it still has that balance between offense and utility that made it such a cool class to begin with.
Melting Point is still one of the most useful melee attacks in the game. It greatly increases not only your DPS, but the DPS of your entire team. In PvE, if you need something to go down FAST, Melting Point helps a ton. Fusion Grenades are almost always helpful thanks to how incredibly reliable and easy to use they are. Hammer of Sol is still very destructive in the right hands, and is way more flexible than other high powered supers.
Sunbreakers also get a ton of neat ability modification options that can increase their survivability (Cauterize), speed (Fleetfire), ability recharge (Simmering Flames) and/or damage (Explosive Pyre). The Sunbreaker may not necessarily be the absolute best at anything, but it can still get a lot of different things done, and done well.
1. Defender
The Defender since day one has probably been the most consistent presence in Destiny’s PvE scene outside of maybe the Sunsinger. There are just so many situations where its super, Ward of Dawn, is so incredibly helpful, and you can never go wrong with bringing one along on a Nightfall strike or raid.
Whether you need an offensive or defensive push, the Defender’s Ward of Dawn has you covered (Weapons or Blessing of Light). Paired with a Helm of Saint 14, a timely bubble can be the difference between a wipe or surviving. We’ve all been there.
Ward of Dawn is also extremely underrated in PvP. People have been disrespecting Defenders in their bubble with a shotgun for years now, and it doesn’t matter how many times they have to learn the hard way not to go in the bubble, people still try (and fail) anyway.
Admittedly though, if it wasn’t for Ward of Dawn, Defenders wouldn’t be as special. Their melee attack can be clutch, but requires a kill to activate and doesn’t really help your teammates at all in PvE. Their grenades, like the Magnetic Grenade, are good, but not amazing. Their unique Suppressor Grenade can be brutal in the right hands in PvP, but really needs to catch more than one enemy to be worth it.
At the end of the day though, they do have Ward of Dawn, and it’s amazing, which is why the Titan Defender sits atop our ranking of the best Destiny Titan subclasses.
