Dead By Daylight

Surviving in Dead by Daylight seems simple on paper: turn on five generators, then escape through a door on the edge of the map while avoiding the weird psycho trying to pin you on one of his many, admittedly well-placed, meat hooks. But in the heat of a match it’s easy to find yourself being sacrificed to the psycho’s great insect god in the sky. Have no fear though, as we’re about to delve into some of the more complicated mechanics and explain everything you need to know in order to escape any killer who happens to sneak up on you.

Turn on the Generators

A Skill Check while repairing a generator.

As we stated earlier, the whole objective of the game for the survivors is to turn on five of the many generators distributed around the map. When the match starts and you spawn into the map it’s important to gather a bearings of your surroundings. Often times you’ll spawn around teammates, however there will be unlucky times when you spawn right next to the killer. Once you have an understanding of who is around you, the next thing is to figure out what is around you. If your lucky you’ll find yourself next to a chest, which will have items to help you survive such as a map or flashlight, or a generator.

In order to turn a generator on it must be repaired, which will take quite a long time and will leave you vulnerable for the killer. On top of this, you’ll also have to complete mini-games called Skill Checks which appear in the form of a Quick-Time-Events. If you succeed the check then the repair will speed up, however if failed some of the progress on repairs will be lost and the killer will be alerted to your position. If you do happen to fail a check, then it may be best to leave that generator and return later, unless you’d like a cleaver driven through your back.

Repair progress is saved on each generator throughout the match and multiple survivors can repair the same generator at the same time, significantly increasing the progress speed, however caution is advised as grouping together might be easy pickings for the killer. When a generator is complete, the lights above it will turn on and the objective list on the bottom right will change to reflect how many generators are still required.

Open the Escape Door

After all three generators are turned on, two switches on the outside of the map will light up for both the survivors and for the killer. These switches will open up the door and allow all of the survivors to escape, but the catch is that each switch is completely out in the open and they require time to open just like the generators (without the Skill Checks). The killer will have a 50/50 shot at taking out the survivors if they pick the correct switch to check and if the survivors don’t act quickly enough, they may find themselves overwhelmed.

More often than not, having one of the survivors bait the killer while his teammates work on activating the escape switch is the best course of action in the late game of a match. Use the item’s you have to stun or guide the killer away so one player can safely open the door. Once the door is opened, the survivors are free to book it to the escape point and live to die another day ensuring the killer remains a glaring disappointment to their creepy insectoid sky demon god thing.

Find the Hidden Trap Door

Aside from complex teamwork and intense strategy, there is an alternate way to survive. If each of your allies die, your left to face the killer yourself, but this also presents an opportunity. Somewhere on the ground of the map is an escape trap door that opens when only one survivor remains. If you can find it you’ll escape with no generators, no skill checks, and no other catches.

Fair warning though, the trap door can be really hard to find and running around as the last survivor looking for an opened square latch is prime hunting grounds for any capable killer. Make sure you still hit the generators while searching for the trap door as having multiple avenues for escape will definitely increase your chances for survival.

Surviving Dead by Daylight may not be easy, but it is definitely rewarding. What are some of your survivor stories for the game? Leave a comment and let us know.
