The Resident Evil 7 demo, titled The Beginning Hour, features two main endings. The first ending is the most straightforward one, and is likely the one you’ll unlock on your first attempt. It simply requires you to get out of the house. The second ending is more commonly referred to as the ‘Phone Call’ ending, and this one comes with a few variations. Listed below are the steps you can take to unlock both endings and their variations.

First ending (Welcome to the family)

To unlock this ending, head out of the room that you started in, go past the kitchen, and enter the room with the rotting carcasses. Here is where you’ll find the backdoor you need to unlock, along with some bolt cutters. Use the bolt cutters to cut the chain on the cabinet just outside the kitchen, and pick up the VHS tape. Bring the tape back to the starting room and play it.

During the VHS segment, simply follow Pete and Andre as they make their way through the house. Pete will reveal a switch beneath the fireplace that opens up a secret room in the starting area. Once you’re back in the ‘present,’ activate the fireplace switch, head into the room, and pick up the backdoor key. Go back to the room with the carcasses and use the key to open the door. This will trigger the end of the demo.

‘Phone call’ ending (first phone conversation)

During your second cycle, immediately activate the fireplace switch once you have control of your character. You’ll find the fuse sitting in the secret room. Take the fuse and put it in the fuse box in your starting room, and then head up the stairs to where the mannequins are. Push the switch, and then take the stairs up to the attic. You’ll hear a phone ring. Enter the first door on your right, and pick up the phone.

You’ll hear a woman’s voice (lots of people think this could be Ada Wong) saying: “Memories hold the truth. Don’t let appearances mislead you.” Once you put down the phone and head for the door, you’ll be attacked by the family man, triggering the end of the demo.

‘Axe’ ending (second phone conversation)

The woman’s words give you a clue as to what to do next in your third cycle. “Memories hold the truth” suggests that you might be able to do something in the VHS segment of the game. Once you wake up in the third cycle, activate the fireplace switch and grab the fuse. Put the fuse into the box, but do not go up to the attic yet. Instead, follow the main path and grab the VHS tape.

When you’re in the VHS segment, look for a lockpick lying on the ground in between the refrigerator and the cabinet in the kitchen. This will allow you to open the locked drawer in the kitchen. It will be empty now, so just follow Pete and Andre to the end of the VHS segment. Once you’re back in the ‘present,’ don’t grab the backdoor key just yet. Go to the kitchen and open the drawer you unlocked, and you’ll find an axe. Now, go upstairs, press the switch, and go up to the attic. The phone should ring again.

This time, the woman will say: “You have the power to choose. But the outcome of that choice may not be what you expect.” Try to leave the room, and the family man will attack you, triggering the end of the demo.

Final ending (third phone conversation)

In this final cycle, activate the fireplace switch, grab the fuse, and put it in the fuse box. Head straight upstairs, and go to the attic without allowing the three mannequins in the corner to turn around to look at you. If you’re quick enough, the phone will ring, giving you the final bit of dialogue: “You will have to say goodbye eventually. But will you be ready?”

This is all we’ve uncovered from the Resident Evil 7 demo so far. The woman’s phone calls are definitely meant to serve as some sort of clue about what you should do next in the demo. However, things get incredibly cryptic with her second and third variations of dialogue. The community still hasn’t figured out how to use the dummy finger and axe in the demo either, though it is widely believed that the axe simply exists to show players that weapons will come into play in Resident Evil 7.
