YouTube creators will be heading to the Emmy Awards this year, with the Television Academy opening up new categories to accommodate modern digital platforms.
Digital content from sources like Crackle, YouTube Red, Adult Swim, Fullscreen, Awesomeness TV, and Maker Studios will now be under consideration for the new short form categories, including outstanding actor and actress and outstanding short form series. These shows must have at least six episodes with a 15 minute or less average running time.
“Our governors recognize the volume of really exceptional work of our members and the people on other platforms,” Academy CEO and chairman Bruce Rosenblum told The Hollywood Reporter. “Look at the quality of talent working in this space. It’s the responsibility of our organization to recognize that.”
Awards for the short form programs will take place during the Creative Arts ceremony, a separate event staged before the Primetime Emmys.
