The upcoming Pokemon fighting game Pokken Tournament will come with its own unique controller. The USB pad is perfectly designed for the game, but it seems like it won’t work with any other Wii U game.
Nintendo’s United Kingdom store is currently accepting pre-orders for the Pro Pad controller. The description for the item lists a few limitations that weren’t clear until now.
Please note the controller is only compatible with Pokkén Tournament for Wii U and will not function properly with other game titles. When playing two player local battles, player one must always use the Wii U GamePad.
In Pokken Tournament, player two will get the full benefit of a controller designed for the game. However, player one must always use the GamePad. Unless things change before the game’s March release, there will have to be a lot of rock-paper-scissors duels before matches to determine who gets which controller.
The shop listing also notes that this controller is tournament legal. That raises the question of which controller is better for tournament play. Could it give one player a control advantage?
Finally, this controller will only work for Pokken Tournament. Its lack of a control stick would make it impossible to use for some Wii U games, but it could have been useful for Virtual Console titles.
What do you think? How will you settle debates over who gets to use which controller in Pokken Tournament matches? Let us know in the comments.
