Wonder Woman Has Tons of Video Game Potential

Wonder Woman is finally getting a feature film, but a game starring her has tons of potential.

This year marks a big milestone in the history of Wonder Woman, as the superpowered Amazon warrior will make her first appearance in a live-action feature film. Next year, Wonder Woman will also star in a solo feature film for the first time.

Even though she’s been featured in countless animated films and games, there is still no Wonder Woman video game. Most people know of her abilities, but how would she use them in her own video game? With over 70 years of history and a wide range of powers in her disposal, it wouldn’t be hard to make an awesome Wonder Woman game.

A DIFFERENT TYPE OF SUPERHERO GAME

In recent years, the most successful superhero games were the Batman: Arkham series by Rocksteady Studios. While those games are popular and incredibly polished, Rocksteady’s open-world style wouldn’t work for a Wonder Woman game. Wonder Woman is too powerful to focus on solving street-level crimes. Imagine how easy it would be to take out gun-wielding thugs with bracelets that can reflect any projectile.

Wonder Woman’s powers would be better suited for a fast-paced action game. Let her fly around the battlefield freely, taking down agile enemies with her versatile fighting skills. That could mean mid-battle switching between sword & shield, Lasso of Truth, and regular melee combat. If Platinum Games could fit another game on their plate, enlisting them to make a Wonder Woman action game would be ideal.

Speaking of Wonder Woman’s arsenal, let’s examine how her weapons could work in a game.

THE LASSO, THE SWORD, AND THE BRACELETS

Aside from super strength and flight, Wonder Woman has plenty of cool weapons that can be used to even the odds in a fight. Implementing them in a video game can keep the gameplay from focusing solely on punches and kicks.

Wonder Woman’s indestructible bracelets have been used in games like Injustice: Gods Among Us as a simple parry attack or a way to block projectiles. These may be a bit overpowered for an action game, but could definitely be tweaked to block only projectiles or grant a damage bonus upon a well-timed parry.

Wonder Woman also has access to a sword and shield to take down more durable enemies. In her own game, these could be utilized for a stance system that opens up new moves in combat. Imagine knocking a enemy into the air with an uppercut and swapping to the sword and shield for a brutal shield bash as they come back down.

Finally, the Lasso of Truth. Anyone ensnared by the lasso must tell the truth and become obedient to its wielder. While an action game probably won’t have much opportunity for L.A. Noire-styled interrogations, this item could still find purpose. Outside of providing a long-range attack, the Lasso of Truth could be used for some enemy hypnosis. Grab a foe with it, complete a series of button inputs, and turn them to your side.

But, even though Wonder Woman has plenty of ways to fight, the real challenge would be finding a suitable opponent for the Amazonian warrior.

CHOOSING A VILLAIN

Wonder Woman has faced off against countless superpowered beings through her career. She’s even had to fight some of the other members of the Justice League, with these fights usually ending in her favor. However, one of her earliest enemies would work best for an antagonist in a video game. That would be none other than Ares, the God of War.

Many people are already familiar with Ares thanks to the God of War series and are aware that he is not the most pleasant Greek god to deal with. He’s attempted to enslave the Amazons by taking over Amazonia. He’s taken a stab at overpowering all of the Gods of Olympus. He even tried to defeat the Allied forces in World War II, and would have succeeded if Wonder Woman didn’t stop him.

While Ares is less of a threat in the current Wonder Woman comics, his early role as an antagonist would be perfect for a game. He has the resources to throw endless amounts of enemies at Wonder Woman, which she could counter by enlisting the Amazons for an amazing large-scale battle. Not to mention, defeating a god in the final boss fight would be a fitting climax to an epic game.

THE RIGHT TIME

There’s a lot of Wonder Woman coming in the next two years. She’ll have an important role in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the Wonder Woman film is set to release in 2017. As one of the founding members of the League, she’ll undoubtedly play a large role in 2017’s Justice League film.

That means that for the next few years, lots of people will get to know Wonder Woman even better if not for the first time. If they’re already familiar, they’ll get plenty of chances to remember why this character is an icon. Now is pretty much the perfect time to start working on a Wonder Woman game.

There’s plenty of talented developers who could make a great Wonder Woman game. With the DC Cinematic Universe just getting started, it’s a great opportunity to give one of the founding members of the Justice League a spectacular game.
