Guerrilla Games Explains Why Horizon Zero Dawn Doesn’t Need Multiplayer

They want the game to focus on Aloy, as a character with rich storytelling.

Last year Guerrilla Games unveiled their new game Horizon Zero Dawn, set in a beautiful post-apocalyptic world filled with dangerous mechanized dinosaurs. The studio has talked about how the game centers around its main protagonist, a hunter named Aloy, and has “an incredibly rich story.”

Accordinng to Executive Producer Mark Norris the game won’t feature any kind of multiplayer mode. This is because multiplayer elements wouldn’t work well with what the development team is hoping to achieve with Horizon. In an interview with IGN Latin America, translated by Gamingbolt,  Norris commented on that fact,

“We are making a new IP for the first time in 10 years and what we really want to do is improve the experience for the player. When you get to face these machines as Aloy, with this great character, who is the real star of the story and everything that happens, have this connection with her, what happens when you add the elements of multiplayer? You play as a supporting character? How does that work?”

Norris continued on, referencing CD Projekt Red’s  The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as similar to Horizon Zero Dawn in the storytelling aspect.

“It is an action RPG with a single player experience. I think we’re similar in that way, we want this to be the story of Aloy. Although a multiplayer mode is great and maybe we can think of something for the future, we want Horizon Zero Dawn’s story to be about Aloy and it’s going to be fantastic when you play it.”

Horizon Zero Dawn is currently slated for release sometime in 2016, and is part of 20 console exclusives Sony lists for PlayStation 4 this year.
