The Independence Day: Resurgence trailer dropped today, and though we knew Will Smith wouldn’t be returning for the alien invasion sequel, it’s time we found out just what happened to his character, Steven Hiller. An official Resurgence website, featuring a timeline of events since the original attack in 1996, explains all.

Beware, Spoilers. About Hiller.

An entry for April 27, 2007 reads the following:

“While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the war of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.”

Well, didn’t see that coming.

Twenty years after the invasion, Earth has been busy reconstructing great cities, strengthening their military, and advancing with the help of alien technology. The most recent entry, 2016, celebrates two decades of global unity.

Independence Day Resurgence hits theaters June 24, 2016. Let us know your thoughts on the trailer in the comments below.
