Earlier today the UK-based development team Rebellion announced that they have bought the rights to GriN’s Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries. The game was originally a Kickstarter title that managed to draw in $72,000 which was well over it’s Kickstarter goal, but the company pulled the plug on the game after the release of the first episode.
On top of acquiring the rights to Woolfe, the co-founders and owners of Rebellion, Jason and Chris Kingsley, also revealed on a Kickstarter FAQ that Rebellion will do their best to fulfill all outstanding Kickstarter rewards by the end of the year “at no further cost to backers.” For those who don’t know, these rewards include a deluxe boxed versions of Woolfe (including CD soundtrack), poster packs, official documents of enlistment, and more.
Surprisingly enough, on the games FAQ page Jason and Chris Kingsley admitted that they don’t know what they will be doing with Woolfe yet as “Woolfe is built in Unreal Engine 3, which is completely separate to and incompatible with Rebellion’s own in-house game engine, Asura.”
This means that gamers shouldn’t be expecting any updates to the original game anytime soon. They also addressed the possibilities of Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries 2 when they revealed that it’s too early to talk about it yet because “At this stage, we’ve not had time to dig into all the game’s assets and code to properly assess what we have. Taking a game originally designed for Unreal Engine 3 and making it work in Rebellion’s own Asura engine is a huge task, and one we can’t take lightly! ”
As for how this change in ownership is going to affect the game now, while Rebellion do own the rights to Woolfe the game is still available on Steam for the same price.
