The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux Makes a Beautiful Game Look Even Better

Better graphics and better checkpoints for everyone.

Last year, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter stood out thanks to its gorgeous graphics and intuitive way of delivering a story without holding the player’s hand. It got a 5/5 score in Twinfinite’s review with the only negative being a slightly harsh checkpoint system.

The game’s developers The Astronauts have released a free update for the game that both improves the game’s graphics and fixes some common complaints.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was created with Unreal Engine 3. Now, all of the assets have been updated to Unreal Engine 4, making the game look even better and more detailed than before.

In their update blog, The Astronauts also detailed a new save system that saves after most player actions. This should greatly lessen the amount of lost progress when quitting the game. The game’s progression has also been tweaked to remove a backtracking section and tone down a section that players felt was “too scary and/or too exhausting.”

PlayStation 4 players already have the Unreal Engine 4 version of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, but the PC update has a large suite of customization options that can improve the graphics even more.

With the new game engine, Ethan Carter will be even easier to port. The developer’s plans for VR support might come more quickly than expected now.
