Viserys has been literally moulding and decaying for the entirety of House of the Dragon season 1, and he finally meets his demise in episode 8. Right before he dies, though, he utters “my love” and passes away. If you’re wondering exactly why he said “my love” in House of the Dragon, here’s what you need to know.

Who Is Viserys’ “Love” in House of the Dragon?

As Viserys is on his deathbed, he seems to stare blankly at the ceiling and says “my love” before passing away. It’s highly likely that he was referring to his first wife Aemma, whom he had unceremoniously cut open while she was in labor in episode 1.

Even after he got remarried to Alicent, we saw just in the previous episode that he mistakenly referred to her as Aemma as he was walking away, which shocked Alicent herself and the Kingsguard accompanying him. It’s clear that he never quite got over his love for Aemma, or the guilt he carried over her death during childbirth. He’s also mentioned a few times in the series that he had never entertained the thought of remarrying after the death of his wife, which shows that he still loved her even after all this time.

Right as Viserys is finally about to pass away, he seems to be at peace as he believes he can finally be with his first wife again.

What Is the Dagger at the End of House of the Dragon Episode 8?

During Viserys’ death scene, the camera also pans over to the dagger near his bedside. This is significant, as the dagger bears the inscription of Aegon’s dream about the Song of Ice and Fire and the Prince that was Promised.

This prophecy foretold the coming of the Prince that was Promised, who would unite the Seven Kingdoms and help to vanquish whatever cold evil was coming from the North. The camera pans to the dagger because Viserys mistakes Alicent for Rhaenyra, and he tells her that he believes that Rhaenyra is the Prince that was Promised, and that she had to ascend the Iron Throne.

Of course, all of this is moot as the White Walkers wouldn’t really materialize as a threat for another hundred years, but Alicent misunderstands him and believes that he meant that Aegon needed to be the one to ascend the Throne.

That’s all you need to know about who Viserys sees when he says “my love” in House of the Dragon. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more news and information on the show, including who Aegon’s wife is, and how long the time skip is before episode 8.
