Horizon Forbidden West: How to Unlock Shining Wastes Tallneck

As you’ve been making your way across the Tenakth tribe’s territory in Horizon Forbidden West, chances are you’ve noticed the Tallneck roaming around the desert-like area called the Shining Wastes that’s seemingly impossible to climb your way to the top of. The good news is that this Tallneck is actually pretty easy to unlock once you’ve reached a specific ability. In this guide, we’ll be running you through how to unlock the Shining Wastes Tallneck in Horizon Forbidden West so you can tick it off your list.

It’s worth noting that this guide contains very mild spoilers for things that you’ll unlock a little later on in the game’s main story quests. If you’d like to enjoy the game spoiler-free, we advise turning back now.

Unlocking the Shining Wastes Tallneck in Horizon Forbidden West

  1. Wait Until You’ve Completed the ‘Wings of the Ten’ Main Story Quest.

    Until you’ve reached this main quest, you won’t be able to unlock the Tallneck in the Shining Wastes.

  2. Unlock the Sunwing Flying Mount and Call It. Then Make Your Way to the Shining Wastes Tallneck

    This is done by selecting it from your quick select menu with left/ right on the d-pad, and then pressing down on the d-pad to summon it.

  3. Fly Just Above the Top of the Tallneck and Use R1 to Slowly Drop Down Onto its Head.

  4. Press Triangle to Override the Tallneck, Revealing the Surrounding Map in the Process.

The good news is it’s impossible to miss the ability to unlock the Sunwing flying mount as long as you beat the main story of the game. Once the ‘Wings of the Ten’ mission is completed, you can make your way straight to the Shining Wastes can finally get this one ticked off.
