Horizon Forbidden West: How to Fly & Unlock Sunwing Override

The map of Horizon Forbidden West is pretty massive, spanning the Tenakth tribe’s territory as well as No Man’s Land to its east. While Aloy can use the fast travel system and Chargers to cover ground fairly quickly, the ability to unlock the Sunwing override and fly in Horizon Forbidden West is far faster, and that’s what we’ll be explaining in this guide for your convenience.

Unlocking Sunwing Override & Flying in Horizon Forbidden West

To fly in Horizon Forbidden West, you’ll need to unlock the Sungwing Override. This occurs at the very start of the ‘Wings of the Ten’ mission, which follows on from the ‘Gemini’ mission.

These are both right towards the very end of the main story questline, so expect to be around the level 30 mark (as this is the recommended level for the Gemini quest). That should give you an idea of how far into the game you’ll need to be to reach this.

At the very start of the ‘Wings of the Ten’ mission, Aloy will need to craft a Sunwing Override in order to continue any further. This can be done at the Fabrication Terminal in your base, where you can also craft overrides for other machines.

Upon crafting this, you can then creep up behind any Sunwing and press and hold Triangle when close to begin the override.

After this, you can then press Square to hop on the back of the Sunwing and take to the skies. Fortunately, there just so happens to be a few Sunwings roosting above your base on the mountains, so you won’t have to go too far to find some.

Summoning Your Sunwing

After overriding one Sunwing, you can call it at any time by selecting the Sunwing icon from your quick-select menu in the bottom left corner of the screen and then pressing down.

The flying machine will drop down and swoop Aloy up before allowing you to take to the skies and quickly cover ground across the Forbidden West.

That’s everything you need to know on flying in Horizon Forbidden West and unlocking the Sunwing override. For more tips, tricks and guides, head over to our wiki or see more of our coverage on the game below.
