What Are Black Boxes?

Just as they are in real life, Black Boxes essentially record the communications of planes that have crashed across the map of Horizon Forbidden West.

They’re one of the game’s many different collectibles and often require you to complete a quick environmental and traversal puzzle in order to reach.

What to Do With Black Boxes in Horizon Forbidden West

When you’ve obtained a Black Box, you’ll want to go to Memorial Grove found over on the west side of the map, shown in the screenshot below.

Head through the main entrance and follow the path as it winds around. Rather than taking the left to go through into the main hall, go straight on and you’ll find a Black Box Collector called Untalla stood by a little hut.

Speaking to Untalla, you’ll learn that they’re fascinated by the black boxes of the ancients littered throughout the world. If you bring them to her, she’ll reward you handsomely.

Specifically, you can trade a Black Box for all manner of different machine components that can be used for upgrading your weapons and armor. Each Black Box you return can be exchanged for one of the machine components in her list.

That’s everything you need to know on Horizon Forbidden West’s Black Boxes. For more tips, tricks and guides, head over to our wiki or see more of our coverage on the game below.
