How to Get the Whetstone Knife

The Whetstone Knife is an item you find fairly early on in Elden Ring, in the starting area, Limgrave.

Specifically, it’s in the Gated Ruins area just before heading toward the castle.

  1. Travel to the Gated Ruins.

  2. Locate the passageway that leads underground.

  3. Open the chest in the hidden room.

What the Whetstone Knife Is Used For in Elden Ring

The Whetstone Knife allows you to infuse weapons with Ashes of War. These are hidden throughout the map but can also be obtained by beating certain bosses or Teardrop Scarabs (Elden Ring’s version of crystal lizards).

These can be combined with equipment at Sites of Grace to grant weapons or shields the ability to perform special attacks or magic by pressing L2/LT while the enchanted item is equipped.

Ashes of War are not consumed when added to a weapon. They can be changed in and out at any Site of Grace. They also increase certain stats while decreasing others. For example, some Ashes of War can increase dexterity while decreasing strength or base damage, and vice versa.

And that’s all you need to know about how to get the Whetstone Knife and what it’s used for in Elden Ring. Be sure to search for Twinfinite or check our guide wiki for more tips, tricks and information on the game.
