Destiny 2: The Witch Queen has arrived and players are able to jump into the latest expansion and start unraveling the mysteries of Savathun’s Throne World and her Lucent Hive. She’s carefully laid out plans for years in the lore, and it’s time to see what she’s been up to exactly. If you’re here, though, you’ve either beaten the campaign already, or if you’ve been hearing about The Witness from the story enough times and you want to know who The Witness is in Destiny 2. Here’s everything we know so far.
Spoiler Warning: In order to explain who The Witness is in Destiny 2, we have to dive into spoilers. So if you care about being spoiled about the events of The Witch Queen, turn away now until you’ve completely finished the campaign.
Who is The Witness in Destiny 2?
Let’s dive right in. The true nature and motivations of The Witness right now are still a mystery. What we can infer, though, is that The Witness is the true big bad of Destiny 2. It was behind the great collapse of the Golden Age, and would have likely ended the Sol System and Guardians right then and there if it wasn’t for Savathun’s efforts to trick The Witness and protect the Traveler.
All we really know is that The Witness is either the physical embodiment of the Darkness itself or perhaps a speaker for the Darkness. It’s also possible that The Witness isn’t the Darkness, but is instead using it as a tool or a “cloak” as the campaign mentions at one point.
No one knows for sure yet, other than Bungie I guess, what exactly The Witness is. It’s safe to assume for now, though, that we’ll be learning more about it over the next two or three years as Destiny’s first saga comes to a close and that it’s probably not friendly.
It expressed an interest in ending “the game” between Light and Dark and ending all death… but also all life.
