Each time you complete a combat scenario, you will earn experience the amount of which seems to be determined by how well you performed. Once you earn 1000 XP and level up, you’ll unlock an Ability Point. These can then be used to unlock and equip new skills for each of your heroes.

Once you have an Ability Point to spend, press the touchpad/ view button to open up the Guardians menu and then select the character you want to unlock an ability for. Press and hold X/ A to confirm you want to purchase the ability.

The abilities in Guardians of the Galaxy range from things like Quill being able to initiate a prolonged burn of his jet boots to gain a tactically advantageous position to give orders or attack enemies to Rocket’s Gravistack grenade, which draws nearby enemies into its blast.

The progression in Guardians isn’t particularly deep; you don’t need to worry too much about the order in which you unlock abilities. That said, there’s no respec option to reverse the decision you have made, so make sure you take a good look at all the options before confirming your choice.
