Guardians of the Galaxy: How to Change Difficulty

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has just released courtesy of Eidos Montreal and publisher Square Enix. This time around, players control Star-Lord as he and bunch of misfit heroes fly about the galaxy completing quests (trying) to save the day. In this guide, we’ll be talking you through Guardians of the Galaxy’s difficulty settings, as there’s a whole bunch of options to fine-tune the experience to your skill level.

First off, when you start a new game, you’ll have the option to choose from one of four difficulty options, these are:

  • We Got This (Easy)
  • We Got This… Probably (Normal)
  • We Don’t Got This! (Hard)
  • We Do It Our Way (Very Hard)

Each of these settings tweaks a plethora of different options for the game’s combat sections which can also be fine-tuned to your liking. So, for example, if you want your Shield Regeneration to be a little faster, you can adjust that, while keeping all of the other difficulty options for ‘We Got This… Probably’ the same.

Changing Difficulty in Guardians of the Galaxy

If at any point you want to change difficulty in Guardians of the Galaxy, press the Options button on PlayStation, the Menu button on Xbox or Esc on PC and select the ‘Difficulty’ option from the pause screen.

From here, you can then change the ‘Current Difficulty Level’ setting which will adjust all of the other presets, or tweak the individual settings listed further down the page.

All Difficulty Settings

  • Guardians Mode Slowdown – Determines how much time is slowed down when you are in Guardians mode. The higher, the greater the slow down.
  • Damage Dealt – The higher this setting, the more damage Star-Lord deals to enemies.
  • Guardians Cooldown Duration – This affects the cooldown on each Guardian’s Abilities. The higher it is, the longer it takes before a Guardian can perform another Ability.
  • Huddle Auto-Win – Turn this on to win every Huddle sequence without having to give an answer.
  • Cost of Elemental Shots – Affects how much Elemental Ammo an Element Shot costs. The higher it is, the more costly each shot will be.
  • Damage Received – The higher this setting, the more damage Star-Lord and the Guardians receive from enemies.
  • Shield Regeneration – Determines how long after taking damage Star-Lord’s shield will begin to regenerate, as well as the rate of regeneration, and the extent of damage taken while the shield is depleted.
  • Death Event Timer – Amount of time an ally is in danger before they become overwhelmed.
  • Vulnerability Timer – Length of time an enemy retains the vulnerabilities applied by Abilities.
  • Death Gate – Number of times a player needs to be hit before dying after reaching 0 HP as well as the length of time a player is in danger before they recover.
  • Objects Outline – Turning this on causes a white outline around Objects interactable by the Guardians.
  • Compass System – Turning this setting off disables the Compass system visible in the Visor.
  • Hints System – The Hints system delivers hints in blockages when it detects you have been stuck on a step for too long. The lower the setting, the more rapidly hints are delivered.
