Spoiler Warning: The following article divulges spoilers for the entire first season of Vinland Saga. If you haven’t seen it yet, we recommend you come back after watching every episode.
The second season of Vinland Saga was just recently announced and it’ll bring back Thorfinn’s story after the dramatic and emotional finale from the first season. Here are five things that we want to see from Vinland Saga Season 2 as it brings us back into the land of anime Vikings.
Thorfinn Becoming a True Warrior
Thorfinn’s father, Thors, had been trying to explain to his son what a true warrior is ever since the very first episode. Understandably, Thorfinn couldn’t grasp what Thors wanted to teach him at the time, being blinded by rage and a lust for revenge after his father’s death.
Vinland Saga Season 2 could finally give us a changed Thorfinn who isn’t always screaming at the top of his lungs about murdering Askeladd. It would be a refreshing change of pace to see the young protagonist attempt to move on to his “true fight,” as Askeladd said in the final episode of Season 1.
Where does Thorfinn go in life now that his desire for revenge can’t be fulfilled? Season 1’s ending set up an opportunity for some major character development, and maybe Thorfinn will finally understand the words that his father left with him.
Thorfinn Reuiniting With His Family
Thorfinn hasn’t seen his family in over 10 years by the end of Season 1, and we don’t see his mom or his sister for many, many episodes. There’s no telling what has happened to his family while he was gone since they essentially disappear from the story after a certain point.
Leif tries to get the stubborn young warrior to return home to Iceland with him to see Ylva and Helga after all these years, but Thorfinn refuses. Since Thorfinn’s quest for revenge against Askeladd comes to a screeching halt, maybe he’ll be more receptive to going back to see his family and finding a new purpose in life in Vinland Saga Season 2.
With nothing holding him back now, he should be able to reunite with them in peace after spending the majority of his life on battlefields. A little family time could even help Thorfinn to take meaningful steps away from his life of bloodshed.
Canute’s Reign as King
Prince Canute finally manages to take his father’s place in a seemingly respectable fashion in the eyes of his subjects at the end of Season 1. He has the demeanor of a changed man, and it’s his time to take the throne.
We need to see what becomes of Canute in his role as king. Does the crown make him more power-hungry like his father, or can he manage to hold to his ideals of creating a paradise? This question is especially important now that he controls the might of the Jomsvikings and many other battle-hungry warriors who bring death and violence wherever they go.
Canute also no longer has Askeladd as an advisor, so he could run into some serious trouble when it comes to negotiations, political conversations, and decisions in battle in Vinland Saga Season 2. He does have Thorkell and Floki working under him, but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s enough to keep his newly inherited kingdom from falling to pieces.
Floki Getting Exposed
Floki is the mastermind behind so much of the grief that Throfinn has gone through, and someone really needs to find out about what he’s done so that Floki can be dealt with.
It doesn’t seem like anyone except the Jomsvikings and Askeladd’s crew would know about Floki’s treachery which makes it highly unlikely that the information would get out. However, if it does, it would be great to see Thorfinn and Thorkell’s reactions to the truth behind what happened to Thors.
Thorfinn finding out the truth could be a real test of character for him to see if he’ll go back down the path of revenge once again. Becoming a true warrior would allow him to rise above the path of violence, but Vinland Saga Season 2 should allow us to see what Thorfinn would do with that knowledge.
More Thorkell
Despite his love of war, Thorkell is ironically one of the more lighthearted and comedic characters in the anime. He brings a certain vibrance to Vinland Saga that can’t exactly be found in any other character, so seeing more of Thorkell in Season 2 would be a definite positive.
Storywise, Thorkell also keeps the plot unpredictable because of his tendency to make decisions on a whim and even switch sides in a conflict just to have more fun. It would be interesting to see if Thorkell actually intends to serve under Canute for the remainder of his days.
If Canute continues to conquer England with ease, Thorkell could simply just end up helping the English for the hell of it. There’s also no telling what he’d do if he finds out that Floki had anything to do with the underhanded methods used to take down Thors.
