If you blinked or stepped away for about 30 seconds towards the end of the recent Sonic Central live stream, you would have missed a tease for what appears to be a new 3D Sonic game.
The trailer didn’t show any gameplay, nor did it even name the game in any way. The trailer, which you can see for yourself in the timestamped video below, only shows Sonic running through a forest. Sonic makes contact with the ground and appears to break time and space somehow? It’s not really clear.
Anyway, shortly after that, there is a sky shot that shows Sonic carving up the forest to form some kind of symbol. It’s not clear what this is, but it eventually forms a logo that appears briefly and then the trailer ends with a year, 2022, and a list of the platforms this game appears to be coming to: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PCs.
While it’s not explicitly clear that this is a 3D Sonic game, it does show a 3D version of Sonic and is being developed by Sonic Team, which for a while now has focused exclusively on the 3D games. It is very possible that this could be a 3D/2D hybrid game like Sonic Generations, though. Again, very little was shown.
If I’m forced to speculate, the symbol appears like something that would be old or found on a ruin of some kind of civilization, which definitely gives me some Sonic Adventure and Tikal vibes. But again, I’m just completely guessing, I have no idea myself.
It was mentioned during Sonic Central that more content would be announced later, so it appears like we’re going to have to wait for more details on this one.
Also announced during the live stream was Sonic Colors Ultimate, and a new 2D collection, Sonic Origins.
