The Evolution Championship Series has just been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment and Endeavor’s esports business, RTS. Evo co-founders Tony and Tom Cannon will be working with Sony and RTS as advisors following the acquisition.
The Evo Twitter account released a statement following the news.
Evo is the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, with various games being put on display. Pros from all over the world gather every year to become number one in the world in their respective games.
The event will be back once again this year, even though it has been altered drastically because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with the acquisition, Sony has also announced that Evo Online will take place from Aug. 6 – 8 and 13 -15.
Entry will be free, and players from North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America will be able to compete in the following titles:
- Street Fighter V: Championship Edition
- Tekken 7
- Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate
- Guilty Gear -Strive-
The online qualifiers will be streamed for fans to watch worldwide, and more details will become available on evo.gg in the near future.
VP of Global Competitive Gaming for Sony Interactive Entertainment, Steven Roberts, had this to say about the Evo acquisition:
“This joint acquisition with RTS marks a new chapter of collaboration with Evo’s co-founders, Tom and Tony Cannon, and their passionate community of fighting game fans.”
The terms of the move, including the cost and division of ownership, have not been disclosed at this time.
