Ghost of Tsushima was one of 2020’s standout open-world games, earning both critical and commercial acclaim for its scintillating samurai swordplay and gorgeous stylized aesthetic. Its success was such that a sequel was more or less a guarantee even without official confirmation, but today in an exclusive report from Deadline Sony has announced it is also planning to expand the franchise to the big screen with a Ghost of Tsushima film.

The adaptation is to be directed by Chad Stahelski, whose resume includes the popular John Wick trilogy of action games. Stahelski is about to direct a fourth Wick film before starting work on Ghost of Tsushima.

Stahelski is also producing the move through 87Eleven Entertainment along with Alex Young and Jason Spitz, while Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan will produce on behalf of PlayStation Productions.

Developer Sucker Punch Productions is also involved, serving as Executive Producers; Peter Kang is overseeing the project on behalf of the studio.

Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions said to Deadline:

“We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen. We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.” said

Ghost of Tsushima became PlayStation’s fastest-selling new IP from a Sony studio when it moved 3.2 million units in just three days last year. Today’s report from Deadline also confirmed the game had sold an impressive 6.5 million units since its launch in July last year — that’s over a million more since the last reported figure in November.
