How to Vent Smoke in Valheim

Venting smoke in Valheim means ensuring that there’s a chimney or opening in the roof of whichever building you’re placing your fire in.

That sounds obvious, but there are a few important things to keep in mind.

First, smoke always travels directly upwards in Valheim, meaning that you’ll need to ensure your chimney or opening is right above your fire and not to the left or right. It’s worth noting that when you actually place a fire it shows the direction the smoke will travel in, represented with a yellow line.

Secondly, without some sort of partial covering over the top of your chimney, your fire will immediately be put out by a passing rainstorm. That means you will have to get up on the roof and build something over the top to prevent any water from leaking down and putting out your fire.

The solution? You need to put something like a roof corner over your chimney to protect it. You can see how we’ve done it in our image above. You could use a larger piece of thatching if you prefer, but the small corner piece seems more fitting if you’re trying to replicate a traditional chimney.

That’s everything there is to know about how to vent smoke in Valheim.
