How to Get Iron in Valheim

After having beaten Eikthyr and gained access to Copper, Tin, and the ability to create Bronze tools, you should be familiar with the process of mining metals and smelting them into useable material.

If you aren’t, then check out our guide on how to get Bronze because it isn’t possible to skip this step.

Moving on, similar to how Bronze is mined from materials unique to the Black Forest, Iron is made from a deposit you can only find in The Swamp biome. Since Valheim is procedurally generated, exactly where the Swamp biome is located will be different for everyone, so we can’t really brief you on where it is. You will need to do some exploring if you’ve yet to find it.

Now, why are we in the Swamp? Well, we’re here to find Sunken Crypts. Why are we looking for Sunken Crypts? To find Muddy Scrap Piles, since these are the deposits in which you can find Iron Scrap.

In turn, Iron Scrap is smelted into useable Iron at the Smelter. Of course, you will need Coal to use your Smelter, but you already knew that, right?

Anyway, once you’ve accumulated enough Scrap Iron and Smelted it, you can craft a whole bunch of useful items, including the full Iron Armor set, Iron weapons, and building materials.

Using a Wishbone to Find Iron

Technically, you can actually mine Iron Scrap without visiting Sunken Crypts, and that’s by using the Wishbone item that you may or may not have already. It is acquired after beating Bonemass, Valheim’s third boss.

The Wishbone is essentially a metal detector, and it used to find three different types of loot: Silver, Buried Treasure, and Muddy Scrap Piles.

That’s everything there is to know about how to get Iron in Valheim.
