How to Fish in Valheim

If you want to fish in Valheim, you’ll first need to – unsurprisingly – track down a Fishing Rod.

This tool is sold by the merchant Haldor found in the Black Forest. Haldor’s location varies based on your game’s seed, and the Black Forest area can be dangerous to explore if you’re still not properly loaded out with gear.

As such, the safest way to find him is to travel around the outskirts of the area until a Bag icon appears on your map, after which you’ll be able to make a beeline to the trader.

Once you reach him, you can then purchase the Fishing Rod for 350 coins. This is no small amount early on, so if you find yourself short on cash, take some time to travel around and gather valuables like Amber to trade to Haldor for extra funds.

Once you have enough, purchase the Rod from Haldor and it’ll be added to your inventory. From there, open your inventory with the Tab key and then assign the Rod to one of your hotkeys. It can then be equipped by pressing whatever hotkey you assigned it to, and can be used while facing large bodies of water.

How to Attach Bait

However, you won’t be catching much by fishing without applying bait to your rod in Valheim.

Fortunately, it’s super easy to do. Haldor sells bait at a rate of 10 coins per 50 pieces of Bait. This should only require you to sell one or two more pieces of Amber to him at most.

Gain the necessary funds and purchase the bait from Haldor. Once it’s in your possession, open your inventory and right click the Fishing Rod. This will open the option to apply Bait to the Rod, which you can click to carry out the action. And with that, you’ll be ready to reel in some tasty sea-based sustenance.

That’s all there is to know about how to fish in Valheim. For more on the game, check out our guides on other topics like how to level ground and how to get Flint.
