CD Projekt Red has poured a ton of time into making Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City and its surrounding areas some of the most detailed and immersive you can experience in video games right now. While press have only been able to currently check out the PC version of the game, a lot of players may be planning to check out Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 or Xbox Series X.
While these next-gen consoles will eventually get their own versions of the game (more details on release date below), Cyberpunk 2077 won’t make full use of the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s additional power when the game releases for PS4, Xbox One and PC on December 10. Here, we’ll talk you through what optimizations you can expect on day one when playing on the next-gen systems, what we can expect from the full next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077, and when the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game will release.
Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 & Xbox Series X Optimizations Detailed
On Dec. 10, Cyberpunk 2077 will be playable on both PS5 and Xbox Series X.
While CD Projekt Red hasn’t shared a ton of details regarding what these optimizations entail, we do know (thanks to a leak on Reddit) that the game will benefit from ‘Quality’ and ‘Performance’ modes on PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X.
The Performance mode will focus on framerate, apparently getting very close to 60fps on Xbox Series X according to the leaker, at the expense of dropping the resolution and image quality.
The Quality mode will focus on maintaining a high resolution to ensure the game looks as best as possible, though your framerate will probably take a hit, too.
While these aren’t exclusive to playing Cyberpunk 2077 on the next-gen consoles, you can expect improved resolution and framerate across the board on PS5 and Xbox Series X when using these, in comparison to playing on a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.
In addition to this, you can expect slightly faster load times on the next-gen systems, though just how much faster on release date remains to be seen.
What is worth pointing out, however, is that these launch day optimizations will likely come from the PS5 and Xbox Series X hardware doing the backward compatibility enhancements we’ve seen in other older PS4 and Xbox One titles, so you may want to scale your expectations back for next-gen enhancements on Dec. 10.
Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 & Xbox Series X Versions Release Date
While you can play Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 and Series X on Dec. 10, this will only be the Xbox One and PS4 version of the game running in backward compatibility mode.
The true, next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 has been announced by CD Projekt Red and was set to be coming “sometime in 2021.”
Given the number of delays we’ve seen for the current version of the game, and the number of performance issues and bugs critics have experienced with the pre-launch build, there’s a good chance that the next-gen version of the game could get pushed out of 2021 and into the following year.
To surmise, right now the earliest we’ll get Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will be sometime in 2021, but it could be pushed back even further.
What to Expect in the PS5 & Xbox Series X Versions?
CD Projekt Red hasn’t provided any details on exactly what improvements the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will include, simply stating it will “take full advantage of the next-gen hardware.”
While confirmed details are scarce, we can take a guess at what to expect from other next-gen versions of games out right now.
The main improvements will likely come in the form of an improved resolution, steadier, higher framerate, and super-fast loading times thanks to the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s internal SSDs.
There’s also a chance that the next-gen versions will see some enhanced visual details in Night City and its surroundings, as well as the characters you meet on V’s adventure.
For now, though, we’ll hold off on speculating much further. As soon as we have any more concrete information on Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, we’ll update this post and let you know.
