While Genshin Impact is a typical RPG at its core, the fact that it’s free to play and features a gacha system means that there are a number of potentially unfamiliar mechanics that govern progression. Here we’re explaining the Ascension mechanic and what the max level in Genshin Impact is.
Ascension Explained in Genshin Impact
If you’ve been playing through Genshin Impact for several hours already there’s a good chance you’ve hit the Level 20 cap for Ascension Level 1. So what does that mean exactly?
Well, as you’ve noticed, gaining Character EXP isn’t especially difficult if you’re playing the game regularly. Quests and combat level your characters fairly quickly, while EXP items like Wanderer’s Advice, Adventurer’s Experience, and Hero’s Wit quickly level a character — and those are all quite plentiful throughout the game.
What slows character progression is that each character’s level is capped at different stages:
- First Ascension 20 → 40 (Adventure Rank 15)
- Second Ascension 40 → 50 (Adventure Rank 25)
Once you have hit that first cap, you’ll need to both reach a certain Adventure Rank and collect the necessary ingredients, which differ for each character. Typically, it involves finding two materials from the open-world and then a character ascension material.
For example, to Ascend Jean from Lv.1 to Lv.2 requires:
- Vayuda Turqoise Sliver
- x3 Dandelion Seeds
- x3 Damaged Mask
All ascension materials can be purchased from the Souvenir Shop in Mondstadt, while the other two materials are pretty common. The second ascension level requires rarer materials, and some characters demand more exotic materials.
From there, you can then Ascend and start leveling again. In the process, you’ll also unlock new Talents for your character and generally make them much stronger.
Note that ascending the Traveller requires a specific set of materials that differ from the other playable characters.
What the Max Level Cap in Genshin Impact Is
The max level cap in Genshin Impact is believed to be 63 at the moment, requiring a total of 3,034,450 EXP to achieve, according to the game’s fandom wiki site.
Given that this is a live service game, you can expect that level cap to increase in future updates as developer miHoYo rolls out new end game content.
