One of the main mechanics in this game involves collecting and using Star Bits, and you’ll need a lot of them if you hope to get every Power Star in the game. What Star Bits Do in Super Mario Galaxy
Star Bits are a type of collectible in Super Mario Galaxy. They are tiny shining stars in each of the galaxies that come in a variety of colors (blue, green, purple, red, white, and yellow). They have several uses in the game.
One use is that collecting 50 of them grants Mario an extra life. This can be very useful to have when you get to challenging stages.
The second use is that they can be used to stun enemies. Aiming at an enemy with the blue Star Cursor and pressing ZR will shoot Bits and stun the foe. This allows Mario a chance to hit and defeat it without jumping on it.
The third use is that Star Bits can be fed to hungry Lumas to form a new galaxy. Every once in a while, the game will tell you that a new hungry Luma has appeared. You can find that Luma on your hub world map and feed it however many Star Bits it is asking for in order it to transform into a galaxy.
This is important because there are Power Stars on these new galaxies, so if you’re trying to get every single Power Star, you’ll need to feed all of the hungry Lumas. Some Lumas are very hungry and require a lot of Bits, so you’ll need to collect thousands over the course of the game.
How to Get Star Bits Quickly
All galaxies have Star Bits throughout the levels, and in many of them, more Star Bits fall from the sky. The easiest way to collect a lot of them is to replay a level that you feel comfortable with over and over while collecting the bits as you go.
You can collect them with any control scheme, but the easiest in my own opinion is playing in handheld mode.
In this mode, you can simply swipe across the screen to collect the Bits. This is often much easier than aiming the Star Cursor with the controller to collect them.
Keep in mind that you can even collect Star Bits with this method even when they are very far away from Mario on the screen. Even if you see tiny bits sparkling far in the distance, you can still swipe them on the screen to grab them.
By doing this through a level that you’ve played before and feel comfortable with, you should be able to end up with hundreds of Bits in a matter of minutes.
Note that you can only have up to 999 Star Bits at once time, so once you hit that, you must exit the level to add them to your collective total.
